SHILLONG: In the midst of growing controversy over an unauthorized eviction drive at Lum Survey, the Hynniewtrp Youth Council (HYC) has defended its actions, claiming the targeted area had become a major hub for drug distribution in Shillong.
HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem asserted that the Lum Survey area, where the eviction was executed by the group, was notorious for drug-related activities.

According to Synrem, the eviction drive aimed to curb the escalating drug supply issue in Shillong city of Meghalaya.
The eviction drive, carried out by HYC, has sparked significant debate and tension within Meghalaya.
However, Synrem maintained that the action was necessary to address the pressing drug problem and restore safety in the community.

It may be mentioned here that the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has directed the state’s chief secretary to submit a detailed report on the recent eviction drive against alleged illegal settlers at Lum Survey.
In a statement issued on May 25, the MHRC secretary announced that the commission had taken suo motu cognizance of distress calls from residents following the demolitions at Lum Survey.
The Meghalaya chief secretary has been instructed to provide the report by May 30.
The eviction drive, conducted on May 23, has led to legal action against top leaders of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC).
Shortly after the drive, the Shillong Sadar police station in Meghalaya registered a case against HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem, vice president Donbok Kharlyngdoh, assistant general secretary Isaac Basaiawmoit, and several unidentified individuals for their involvement in the alleged illegal actions.
