SHILLONG: The banned insurgent group, Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), based in Meghalaya, claimed responsibility for the IED blast near Shillong’s contentious Punjabi Lane on March 09.
They have demanded the relocation of settlers of the Punjabi Lane, also known as Harijan Colony, in Shillong city of Meghalaya.

“Due to the long-standing negligence of the Meghalaya government in relocating these Harijan from this area, we have no choice but to resort to military action,” HNLC general secretary, Sai?kupar Nongtraw said in a statement.
He further said: “This serves as a gentle reminder that if the government fails to protect our community, we may see Hynñiewtrep descend into civil war.”
“Any community that poses a threat to Hynniewtrep will be dealt with firmly. The government must relocate them within one month or face the consequences,” the HNLC leader added.

In the March 09 IED blast at Punjabi Lane in Shillong, one person was sustained injuries.
After the explosion, the Harijan Panchayat Committee reached out to union home minister Amit Shah, urging his involvement and intervention.
They allege that despite residing in Shillong since being relocated during the British era, local tribal communities have subjected them to harassment.
