Heavy downpour has wreaked havoc in several parts of Meghalaya with fresh landslides and flash floods occurring in many places on Friday.

Heavy rains continued to lash intermittently since Tuesday.

A major landslide at Lower Lumparing occurred on Friday at around 3.30 am burying a house and some tenants who stayed in the house.

Though it was not clear how many persons were buried under the debris, one body has been recovered so far.

Search and rescue operations are on by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel along with the personnel of the Meghalaya fire and emergency services.

The heavy downpour has caused flash floods in many places including plain areas of Shillong city like Polo and Pynthorumkhrah area.

Two part-time workers, Sohibuton Marak and Silnang Marak of the Meghalaya police were buried under the rubble of a landslide while clearing the debris of another landslide at the Police Reserved in Shillong.

The MeT department has predicted very heavy rainfall with an extremely heavy downpour at isolated places in almost all the 11 districts of Meghalaya.

An alert for heavy rainfall has been issued to all the deputy commissioners.
