The Meghalaya government has decided to extend one-time financial assistance of Rs 3,000 to the working people from outside the state and each of the students who have been stranded in various parts of the country.

Deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong said in view of the lockdown, the government has decided that for daily wage earners, who work in an unorganised sector, the state government will pay Rs 2,100 each for three weeks from March 23.

However, Tynsong said only construction workers already registered with the government under the Central Act, are getting Rs 1,000 per week per worker.

“The state labour department has proposed to extend the financial benefit to workers working in an unorganised sector at Rs 700 per worker which comes to Rs 2,100 each for three weeks. There are around 1.20 lakh such workers,” Tynsong said.

Tynsong said the students and those working outside the state will also get Rs 3,000 as one-time assistance.

However, those from the state, who are working under the state and Central governments outside the state, are not entitled to get the benefit.

He also informed that there are around 3,000 students including working people who have stranded in different parts of the country and they have expressed before the state government that they want to come back to the state.

Tynsong, however, said the government has requested them to stay back in their respective places till April 30.
