SHILLONG: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma reiterated on Tuesday (March 12) that his government remains steadfast in its stance against allowing uranium mining in the state.

His remarks followed reports of an organization purportedly advocating for the resumption of uranium mining in Meghalaya and corresponding communication with the Centre.

Addressing reporters, Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma clarified, “Any organisation can communicate with the government of India, but their views do not necessarily reflect the official stance of our government.”

He emphasized that the Meghalaya government is resolute in its decision not to permit uranium mining without thorough consideration of public opinion and scientific assessments.

“We are very clear that without engaging the people, without comprehensive scientific evaluations, uranium mining will not be permitted in our state,” the Meghalaya chief minister asserted.

He underscored the significance of this issue, stating that it concerns the well-being and future of Meghalaya’s residents.

Acknowledging differing perspectives on the matter, Sangma emphasized the need for cautious deliberation, extensive community engagement, and meticulous impact assessments before making any decisions.

He stressed that until these crucial steps are completed, the Meghalaya government will refrain from endorsing any initiatives toward uranium mining.

Additionally, the Meghalaya CM clarified that the state government has not received any communication from the Centre regarding uranium mining-related matters.
