Guwahati: A truck carrying Food Corporation of India (FCI) foodgrains was allegedly targeted by unidentified robbers near the FCI Food Storage Depot (FSD) at Jowai in Meghalaya during the intervening night of May 19 and 20.
According to an FIR lodged by FCI contractor firm Purbanchal Banijya Vikash, around eight to ten unidentified persons allegedly stole bags of foodgrains from a parked truck bearing registration number AS25CC-3212 outside the FCI FSD in Jowai.
The company, which is engaged in handling and transportation of FCI foodgrains under a contract from Railhead Kamalajari to FSD Jowai, stated that a rake carrying foodgrains had arrived at Kamalajari on May 18.
A total of 16 trucks were loaded for transportation to Jowai, of which eight were unloaded on May 19, while the remaining vehicles were waiting for unloading near the depot.
In the complaint addressed to the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jowai Police Station, the contractor alleged that the truck driven by Anarul Haque and carrying 490 bags of foodgrains weighing 240.158 quintals was parked outside the depot during the night.
At around 2 am, the unidentified persons allegedly cut the ropes securing the consignment and stole around four bags of foodgrains from the vehicle.
The FIR further alleged that the driver was locked inside the truck cabin and threatened with severe violence during the robbery.
The company stated that three bags were later recovered, while the remaining stolen bags were taken away by the accused persons.
A mobile phone video of the post-robbery scene, reportedly recorded by the driver, has also been submitted to the police along with transport and challan documents.
Describing the stolen foodgrains as essential commodities belonging to FCI, the contractor urged police to register the FIR, conduct a thorough investigation, and take legal action against those involved.
