The Meghalaya government is on the move to declare the office of English daily, The Shillong Times as containment zone or shut it down for some days, as three employees of the newspaper tested positive for COVID-19.

Director health services (MI) Dr Aman War said that three employees of the newspaper–the machine man, driver and helper –have tested positive for COVID-19.

Dr War said that at present there are more than 70 high risk contacts of the positive cases detected from the newspaper.

When asked why the area was not declared as containment zone though the first positive case has been detected few days ago, the DHS said that the magistrate and doctor are in consultation on this matter and investigation was also conducted.

To a question if staffers of the newspaper have been forced to come and work from the office, the DHS said that if anyone is forced to work should give a complaint.

Meanwhile, the Dorbar Shnong Kench’s Trace, Oxford Hill & Rilbong has on Saturday written a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills district questioning as to why the office of the the building/area of The Shillong Times has not been contained till date and no steps has been taken to contain the building/area.

“Unfortunately, today (Saturday) we have received information from the staff of Health Department that another 2 (two) more persons who are working in this same office (The Shillong Times Office), Rilbong were tested positive for the COVID 19,” Glanding Lyngdoh, the headman of Dorbar Shnong Kench’s Trace, Oxford Hill & Rilbong said in the letter.

Stating that the matter is more serious now as there are more positive cases in different localities under this Dorbar Shnong, the headman said, “Given this situation and in order to contain the further spread of the virus, we, therefore urge the District Administration to kindly take steps to declare the office building of The Shillong Times, Rilbong as a containment building/area immediately for safety and security of all the residents in the locality and the public at large.”
