Guwahati: The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the Meghalaya Official Languages Ordinance, 2026, paving the way for Khasi and Garo to be recognised as official languages of the state alongside English. The decision also entails the repeal of the Meghalaya State Language Act, 2005.
With this move, Khasi and Garo will be gradually introduced in official government communication, marking a significant shift in administrative functioning. Officials said the transition would be implemented in phases as necessary amendments are made to existing laws and procedures.
One of the key legislations set to be revised is the Meghalaya State Legislature (Continuance of English Language) Act, 1980. Once amended, members of the Assembly will be able to speak and participate in debates in Khasi and Garo, in addition to English.
The decision is also expected to eventually allow the use of these languages in various examinations. However, authorities clarified that the rollout will not be immediate and will be carried out in a phased manner.
The ordinance follows a resolution passed by the Assembly seeking inclusion of Khasi and Garo in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. The government maintained that granting official status at the state level is a necessary step towards securing national recognition.
Officials said the move is expected to strengthen Meghalayaโs case for inclusion of Khasi and Garo in the Eighth Schedule and send a strong signal to the Union government.
