Shillong: Meghalaya BJP vice president and Tura MDC, Bernard N Marak, has expressed his willingness to contest the upcoming Gambegre by-polls, subject to approval from the central leadership.

Marak stated that while there is substantial support from grassroots activists and party leaders, the final decision will be made by the central authorities.

Marak claimed that he was ready for any challenge.

He acknowledged the formidable opponents potentially entering the race, including Saleng Sangma’s candidate, Deborah Marak from NPP, Chief Minister’s wife, or James Sangma, and TMC’s Zenith Sangma or his wife.

“It’s shaping up to be a battle of giants. I may be the underdog, but I am a grassroots leader,” he said.

Marak also addressed allegations of communalism against the BJP, claiming that the party does not engage in such activities.

He stated that issues like the CAA and UCC often stir fear among the public, despite Meghalaya’s autonomous status under the Sixth Schedule. “These leaders seem to overlook the autonomy granted to Meghalaya, causing unnecessary confusion and fear,” he added.
