The number of people, arrested in connection with a human trafficking ring unearthed by West Jaintia Hills District Executive Force (WJH-DEF) on June 2, 2019, has risen to 12.
“The investigation is still ongoing to nab others involved at the earliest,” said Lakador Syiem, Superintendent of Police of West Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya.
Informing that raids have been carried out by police, Syiem stated, “In connection with the human trafficking ring unearthed by West Jaintia Hills District Executive Force (WJH-DEF) on June 2, 2019 where 10 people were arrested and forwarded to judicial custody, the Special Investigation Team led by M.J. Manigar, Deputy SP (HQ) has carried out a series of raids based on the statements of the victims.”
Based on the statements and other evidences two persons have been arrested for being involved in illicit physical relationship with minors, informed the West Jaintia Hills SP.
“These two accused persons have been identified as 41-year-old Khrolan Nongrum, a fireman posted in Fire and Emergency Service Station at Jowai, a resident of Khimusniang, Jowai and 31-year-old Lekipia Phawa, a resident of Riatsiatsim, Jowai in West Jaintia Hills district,” he added.
Both alleged accused persons have been forwarded to the court and placed under judicial custody on June 9, 2019.
“A total of 12 people have been arrested in connection with the case so far,” he further said.
