KSU demands action from Assam, Meghalaya governments to ensure border residents’ safety

Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has urged the governments of Assam and Meghalaya to prioritize the safety, security, and economic well-being of residents living along the interstate border.

KSU General Secretary Donald Thabah expressed concern about the ongoing issues faced by border communities, despite ongoing efforts to resolve the boundary dispute.

He added about the need for both states to address not only security concerns but also the economic hardships faced by these residents due to restricted movement and trade activities.

“People on both sides of the border have suffered for a long time,” Thabah stated.

He added, “Their safety, security, and livelihood must be ensured. They should not be subjected to harassment, and both governments have a responsibility to address their economic and security needs.”

Thabah cited specific examples of past incidents, including the recent events in Langpih, highlighting the need for a comprehensive solution that addresses the root causes of these conflicts. 

He emphasized the importance of investigating such incidents thoroughly and holding those responsible accountable.
