Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday announced that the Election Commission of India (ECI) accorded “National Party” status to the National People’s Party (NPP).
In a twitter message, Sangma, said, “Glad to announce to our party supporters, well-wishers and members of NPP that #ElectionCommissionOfIndia has accorded ‘National Party’ status to National People’s Party.”
It was reported by Northeast Now on Thursday that the ECI would soon accord “National Party” status to NPP after it registered victory in five seats in Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly election.

Now, NPP is the eighth party in India to be listed as “National Party” by the Election Commission of India. It is also the first political party from northeast to be accorded the status.

Sangma, who is also the president of the NPP, thanked people of northeast for their support. He described the achievement as a “befitting tribute” to the party’s founder Purno Agitok Sangma.
“It is a very nostalgic moment for all of us that the party founded by Late Purno Agitok Sangma has achieved its due recognition. It is not just an achievement for NPP but for the people of #Northeast for their overwhelming support and thrust bestowed on the party,” Conrad K. Sangma said.

NPP’s National General Secretary Thomas Sangma handed over the letter of recognition from ECI as a “National Party” to Conrad K Sangma.
“The recognition of NPP as ‘National Party’ will surely motivate each member of the family of NPP and will further enable us to work for the greater cause of the region and its people,” Sangma said.
