Congress MLA from Rambrai-Jyrngam, Kimfa Sydney Marbaniang, on Thursday sought the intervention of Meghalaya Government for immediate and unconditional release of the five villagers arrested by the Assam Police recently from West Khasi Hills.

He also said that one of the five persons, including two women, arrested by Assam Police from a border village in West Khasi Hills is a disabled girl in her late teens.

He made this appeal while moving a Zero Hour notice in the Assembly on Thursday.

Speaking during Zero Hour on the last day of the Assembly’s Autumn Session, Marbaniang stated the five villagers, including the 18-year-old disabled girl, were languishing in Boko police station in Kamrup district of Assam for almost three weeks and urged the state government to take immediate steps to ensure their release at the earliest.

Notably, Boko police had arrested the five persons on the allegation that they were involved in the recent assault incident while acting on an FIR filed by Assam officials who visited Hahuapara village for conducting inspection of the road constructed by Meghalaya Government on August 28 last.

Also demanding the government to stop the Assam Police from harassing the people residing in the inter-state border, Marbaniang lamented that the Assam Government has failed to honour the decision taken at the joint meeting of the two states held in 2010.

The high-handedness of Assam Police had reportedly prompted 575 villagers from 77 families of Hahuapara to flee home and take shelter in a school building and in and around Sildubi and its adjacent villages.

Marbaniang also apprised the House that the villagers are living in makeshift structures in the cramped school building without proper sanitation.
