Leader of Opposition in Meghalaya – TMC’s Mukul Sangma – has slammed the Conrad Sangma-led government in the state for allegedly failing to take action against illegal coal mining.

Mukul Sangma has claimed that rampant illegal coal mining in Meghalaya continues unabated, especially in South Garo Hills district.

Mukul Sangma made this statement after paying a sudden visit to Eraaning coal dumping site in South Garo Hills district.

Sangma said that he has “found evidence of illegal coal mining and transportation”.

Mukul Sangma said that the NPP-led Meghalaya government has turned a blind eye towards illegal coal mining.

“This government is in no mood to stop these illegalities (illegal coal mining),” Mukul Sangma added.

On the other hand, responding to the allegations of Mukul Sangma, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma has once again reiterated that the state government has instructed all district administrations to ensure “no illegal coal mining takes place”.

“All district administrations and the police department have been instructed to ensure no illegal coal mining takes place,” Conrad Sangma said.

“Only those with proper documents are being allowed,” Conrad Sangma added.
