Fashion designers Priyangsu Maji and Sweta Tantia plan to showcase their flagship label “GARO” in the Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive’2019 to increase the brand visibility in India.

Inspired by the bold tribal prints and motifs of the ethnic Garos, the Kolkata-based designers, Priyangsu Maji and Sweta Tantia created the label in 2013.

Named after the largest tribe of Meghalaya, the label “GARO” primarily focuses on couture wear for women. It is a luxury brand for women using heritage textiles and handcrafted techniques in remote parts of India with a contemporary vision.

Distinguished for its bold prints, motifs, unique usage of colours, celebrities like Madhuri Dixit Nene, Sania Mirza, Zareen Khan, Divya Khosla Kumar and Rakul Preet Singh have walked the ramp wearing “GARO” in different fashion shows during the last six years.

As the tribal Garos of Meghalaya are known for being bold, the designer duo from Kolkata decided to dedicate their designs to them. The label talks about the identity of the ethnic group, the designers claimed.

Designer Sweta Tantia claims her label “GARO” contributes towards building a range of affordable and comfortable organic clothing suitable for a tropical country like India. The clientele of “Garo” comes largely from the 25 to 45 age group.

The clients buy “GARO” only because they understand the concept of handloom and how comfortable they are. At present, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai are our major markets for “GARO” in India.

The designers claimed “GARO” is available in various premier stores in India, like Kalon in Kolkata; Ogaan, Carma, Amoha and Gyaans in Delhi; Aza in Mumbai; Anahita in Hyderabad; Yaffa in Raipur; and Monsoon in Ahmedabad.
