The Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) on Wednesday asked the Meghalaya government to transport all helpless people to their respective villages from Shillong to Garo Hills by providing buses immediately.

According to AHAM, there are many labourers and students from Garo Hills who are stranded in Shillong.

AHAM additional general secretary Kingstone B Marak said in a statement that members of the AHAM, Shillong Capital Unit have received many complaints from different shelters home set up for the poor people.

“There are no sufficient blankets available in the shelter homes where the stranded students and labour workers are sleeping on the floor. The food supply is done by individuals, NGOs and Churhes, but the departments are not taking initiative.

“The shelter homes are in poor condition as there are no proper toilets and it will surely affect the health of the people in the shelter homes,” Marak said.

He added many family members and relatives have been calling for helping the students and the daily wage workers.

“After highlighting these grievances, we want to appeal the Government of Meghalaya to please transport these helpless people to their respective villages by providing the  buses as possible as, 14 days is not a matter of joke and if the virus does not kill them surely hunger and starvation will kill them or worsened their health,” Marak said.
