Curfew in Shillong agglomeration and its adjoining areas has been promulgated for 11 hours from 9 pm on Saturday to 8 am on Sunday.

The district magistrate of East Khasi Hills district under Section 144 CrPC promulgated the curfew in areas which include the whole of the Municipal area, whole of Cantonment area, all areas under Mawlai Block including census town and all areas under Mawpat Block including census town.

Curfew will also remain effective in areas under Mylliem Block from Umshyrpi bridge up to 7 mile Upper Shillong, Madanrting, Mawblei, Laitkor, Nongkseh, Umlyngka, Lawsohtun, Mawdiangdiang, Diengiong and Siejiong.

“The curfew imposed in areas under Lumdiengjri police station and Sadar police station and their respective Beat Houses and Outposts with effect from 12 noon of Saturday will also continue till 8 am on Sunday,” the district magistrate of East Khasi Hills said.

The curfew was imposed as the law and order deteriorated after clash between non-indigenous people and KSU activists at Ichamati village in Shella on Friday after the meeting against CAA and subsequent violence that erupted in Shillong on Saturday.

While 10 non-tribals were stabbed and assaulted by miscreants in Shillong on Saturday, 8 other non-indigenous people were arrested by police in connection with the killing of a Khasi youth on Friday.

The 8 people have been arrested by Meghalaya police on the basis of an FIR filed by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) at Shella police station.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Police have arranged a vehicle to ferry the tourists, who are stranded at Shillong and Sohra due to the ongoing law and order situation in East Khasi Hills district.

In a notice issued on Saturday, the Meghalaya director general of police (DGP), R. Chandranathan said: “In view of the ensuing law & order situation in East Khasi Hills district, a vehicle to ferry stranded tourists has been made available within the district.”

Meghalaya Police chief R. Chandranathan through the notice also asked the stranded tourists at the toll free number 1800-345-3846 to contact for assistance.
