Curfew relaxed in Shillong for 14 hours

The East Khasi Hills district administration on Wednesday relaxed the curfew imposed in Shillong for 14 hours.

“The curfew was relaxed from 6 am in the areas notified under Lumdiengjri police station and Sadar police station and their respective outposts and beat houses,” stated an order issued by District Magistrate MW Nongbri.

“However, curfew will be re-imposed again at 8 pm,” the notification added.

The areas under curfew include Jaïaw, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission, Mawprem, Lumdiengjri, Lama Villa, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hill, Cantonment, Butcher Road, Mawlonghat excluding localities beyond Umshyrpri bridge.

The areas also included the entire Khyndai Lad (Police Bazaar), Jail Road, Keatinge Road, and Polo.

Banks, markets and shops were open and vehicles were seen plying on the roads in Shillong.

In view of the prevailing law and order situation, the district administration of East Khasi Hills has not completely lifted the curfew in Shillong.

Moreover, mobile internet services continue to remain suspended in Shillong.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday urged the people to bear with the state government for the ban on mobile internet.

He said the state government did not want to ban the mobile internet service but it was important to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of the people.
