As violence continues to unfold in Shillong following a clash, Congress party has planned to stake claim to form government in Meghalaya.
Congress emerged as a single largest party after former Chef Minister Mukul Sangma’s daughter Miani D Shira won the Amapati Assembly seat in the bypoll recently.
Congress party insiders said the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) is all set to meet Governor Ganga Prasad to stake claim to form the government in the hill state.
“The CLP meeting to be held today in Shillong will also hold detail discussion in this regard,” said a party insider.
Party sources said Congress is in touch with United Democratic Party (UDP), which won six seats in Assembly polls and ready to support UDP chief Donkupar Roy as chief minister.
In Karntaka, Congress has supported HD Kumaraswamy of JD (S) as Chief Minister, which bagged 40 seats in the state.
With the Ampati win, the Congress has 21 members in the 60-member assembly, while nearest rival the National People’s Party (NPP) has 20 members.
After the Karnataka assembly results, the Governor there first invited the BJP – the single largest party in the Assembly – to form the government.
The NPP-BJP alliance led by Conrad Sangma with the support from UDP formed the government in the state in March this year.
