Lok Sabha MP Vincent H Pala has written to Union road transport and highway infrastructure minister Nitin Gadkari seeking immediate repair of a vital bridge on National Highway 6 in Meghalaya.

Shillong MP Pala in the letter sent to Union minister Gadkari on Friday said that the condition of the bridge on Shillong Bye–Pass is in deplorable condition.

“I would like to bring to your kind notice that the condition of a very important Bridge at National Highway-6, Bye-Pass, Shillong is in a dilapidated condition…I hope you are aware of the importance of the bridge which connects to the rest of North Eastern India,” the letter read.

Pala urged the Union minister to direct the concerned officers and departments to take immediate action for repairing the bridge.

The National Highway 6 connects South Assam, Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura.

Meanwhile, the Ri-Bhoi district administration has closed down vehicular movement across the bridge from June 19 to June 23 due to a technical defect in the Bailey bridge.

Ri Bhoi district DM RM Kurbah on Friday issued an order based on information received that a technical defect on the Bailey bridge at Umrol Dwar Ksuid Bridge (Shillong Bye – Pass) is observed and required replacement of some planks in the bridge.
