Assault on policeman during immersion mars Durga Puja festivities in Shillong

Bijoya Dashami celebrations in Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya were marred by an ugly incident of assault on a security personnel by puja revellers during the ritual of idol immersion on Friday.

A special operation team (SOT) personnel of the state police who was on duty during the immersion ceremony of goddess Durga which marked the culmination of the four-day Durga Puja festival was assaulted by some miscreants among the puja revellers.

According to reports, the untoward incident took place near the office of Shillong Municipal Board at around 2 pm in the afternoon when a group of persons started assaulting the cop after he prevented them from sleeping on the middle of the road when devotees were on a procession for immersing the idols at the Immersion Ghat in Umkhrah river near Polo Grounds.

The injured police personnel has been identified as Flint Anderson Lapang, aged around 31 years and hailing from Mawlai Nongpdeng.

Flint was later taken to the hospital after he sustained injury on the head.

Later interacting with media, he has said that when he requested the people not to sleep on the road, a group of around five to six youth started beating him up.

According to him, all of them were in an inebriated and also abused him verbally with foul words.

Meanwhile, one Sunny Ghosh, aged around 24 years, has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Ghosh, was arrested from Khyndai Lad or popularly known as Police Bazaar area of the city.

Meanwhile, police have filed a case and investigation is on.

The police have also launched a massive hunt to nab the other accused in the assault of the SOT personnel.
