A 75-year-old man from south Assam’s Karimganj died due to Covid-19 related complications at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong on Monday.
The deceased, identified as Ranjit Kumar Das was brought to NEIGRHIMS with multiple disorders after he was tested positive in Assam.
“Das passed away on Monday at 10 am and the cause of death was due to type 1 respiratory failure with Covid pneumonia and septic shock,” Meghalaya director of health services (MI) Aman War on reporters in Shillong on Monday evening.
He said that the deceased from Karimganj will not be counted in Meghalaya, but the number will be counted in Assam as the patient had been tested positive in Assam prior to coming to NEIGRIHMS.
Dr War informed that another two deaths due to COVID-19 were also reported which include, Juthika Ghosh (45) female from Upper Jail Road in Shillong who passed away at Nazareth Hospital, and Jyotimoy Sharma (48) male from Tripura passed away at NEIGRIHMS.
He informed that on September 19, Ghosh was referred to Nazareth Hospital by Woodland Hospital after tested positive on September 18.
The patient died on September 19 itself 6:20 pm due to Covid with severe anemia and cerebral vascular accident.
Dr War further said that a report from NEIGRIHMS was received that a patient, Jyotimoy Sharma (48) from Tripura who was admitted at NEIGRHIMS on September 8 with history of loss of consciousness and respiratory problem was tested positive for COVID-19.
“The patient passed away on September 19 at 5:20 pm due to septic shock with type 1 respiratory failure and Covid pneumonia,” Dr War said.
Barring the deceased from Karimganj, Meghalaya so far recorded 38 deaths due to COVID-19.
Dr War informed that 73 new positive cases were reported on Monday which include 59 cases in East Khasi Hills district (six armed forces and paramilitary forces, 53 others including 48 high risk persons, one doctor from Woodland)
He said that 12 new positive cases were also reported in West Garo Hills district which include four armed forces and paramilitary forces, eight others (health workers from Holy Cross Hospital, Tura), while one returnee in North Garo Hills district and one high risk in West Jaiñtia Hills district.
With 73 new positive cases, the state now has a total of 2,169 active cases.
The DHS informed that 15 patients (six in West Garo Hills, four in Ri Bhoi, three in South West Garo Hills and two in East Jaiñtia Hills district) have recovered from the viral infection on Monday, taking the total recoveries to 2,527.
Meghalaya has a total of 4,734 cases of COVID-19 which by include, 2,169 active cases, 2,527 patients who have recovered, and 38 deaths.
The number of samples sent for testing till date is 1, 33,259 out of which, 1, 27,589 samples have been tested negative, while 937 test results are awaited.
As many as 38,953 entrants from outside have been registered in the state.
