The Meghalaya government has floated a tender for construction of a market complex at Laitumkhrah and called for competition to prepare a design to build a world class iconic structure at Barik junction under Smart City project.

Shillong has been selected along with 99 cities in the country under Smart City Mission of the Central Government.

Meghalaya urban affairs minister, Hamletson Dohling said that a tender has been floated for the construction of market complex at Laitumkhrah at Rs 30 crore under Smart City.

Dohling said that the remaining part is to only allot the work to a selected contractor.

Dohling said that another project to be taken up under Smart City is the proposed construction of a world class iconic structure at Barik junction in an area about 3.5 acres.

At present the PWD office is being housed at Barik junction.

Dohling said that the government has called for a competition to prepare a design of the proposed iconic structure which will have facilities like parking lot, office, stalls among others.

Three best entries would be selected along with cash prizes which include Rs five lakh for first prize, Rs three lakh for second prize and Rs two lakh for third prize.

Later, a skywalk would be constructed which will link with the iconic structure.

“Once the best design is selected, the government will work out further details including project cost,” he said.
