The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission has ordered a high level inquiry to unearth actual truth on the alleged negligence on the part of the Meghalaya Power Department that led to the death of five persons due to electrocution near Manikganj village in North Garo Hills district last month.

The Commission has taken a suo-motu cognizance of this matter following media reports and directed the Chief Secretary to cause an enquiry on the matter by an officer not lower than the rank of Secretary and submit a report within 45 days.

“In view of the facts and circumstances of the case, the State Commission is of firm view that a high level inquiry needs to be conducted to unearth the actual truth of alleged negligence on the part of the Department concerned and also fix responsibility on the persons for causing the happening of such unfortunate incident,” the Commission said in a statement issued on Friday.
