Curfew was imposed on Monday in Mahendraganj area in South West Garo Hills district after an angry mob stormed into Mahendraganj police station and vandalized government property.

The mob attacked the police vehicles in protest against an alleged firing by police on a mentally ill person, who ran away after snatching an INSAS rifle from a police constable on Sunday night.

The person, identified as Ahidul Islam, had allegedly snatched the rifle from police constable Pini Sangma on Sunday at around 8.30 pm.

According to police, Sangma was on routine patrolling along with a team of Mahendraganj police at the PWD Road near BSF BOP, Mahendraganj.

Police resorted to firing at the miscreant, but he managed to run away.

Police said that the police team swung into action and search operations were carried out in the border area.

The BSF personnel in the area have also been informed about the incident.

Mahendraganj area is being affected by flood and the police station is also under water.

But contradictory stories emerged in connection with the incident.

One story claimed that the person, who snatched the rifle from the police constable, was mentally unsound and fell into flood water and died after having fired by police.

The other story stated that the person, who snatched the rifle, had fled away from the scene.

There was no confirmation whether the person, who allegedly took away the rifle, was injured or got killed in the firing incident.

Meanwhile, the district magistrate of South West Garo Hills has imposed curfew in and around Mahendraganj area till 8 am on Tuesday after angry mob barged into the Mahendraganj police station and vandalized property including vehicles.

The mob also damaged a fire tender.

Security has been beefed up in the area.
