Meghalaya Police on Tuesday apprehended three drug peddlers from Shillong and seized around 98 grams of heroin worth nearly Rs 10 lakh from their possession.
Notably, among the three arrested drug peddlers, one is a woman who happens to be the wife of an ex-Army personnel.
The arrest was made during a raid conducted at Madanrting Block- D and Block-F in the city on Tuesday.
The arrested persons have been identified as Lal Peng Rowli (53), Rebecca Hmar (35) and her husband Vanlal Mawia Hmar (28).
Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police (City), Steve Rynjah informed the media that a total of 98 grams of high grade heroin worth Rs 9.8 lakh was seized from their possession.
He said while 23.42 gram of heroin along with cash Rs 34,760 was seized from the residence of Rebecca at Block F, 61.6 gram of heroin with Rs 1.41 lakh was recovered from the house of Rowli.
According to the SP, Rowli was the wife of an ex-Armyman who was part of the war in Sri Lanka.
According to Rynjah, peddlers usually keep heroin in soap cases and each case is sold at a rate of Rs 35,000 in Shillong and police in its raid seized as many as eight soap cases containing heroin worth Rs 2.5 lakh.
According to police, the movements of the arrested drug peddlers were being monitored by the police for quite some time now before being trapped on Tuesday.
A case has been registered against the arrested persons under section 21 (B) and Section 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) Act.
The operation on Tuesday was carried out in collaboration with Anti Narcotic Task Force (ANTF).
Notably during the year 2018, Meghalaya Police have seized around 1.5 kg of heroin, and 20,000 tablets in and around Shillong. As many as 49 cases have been registered under the NDPS Act.
Meanwhile the SP (City) urged the Dorbar Shnongs to remain vigilant and urged them to check the background of people from outside the State who come to stay as tenants in their respective localities.
