Guwahati: The Meghalaya government has stepped up surveillance and containment efforts following the detection of African Swine Fever (ASF) cases in parts of the state, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said on Wednesday.
Speaking to the media, Sangma stated that authorities are closely tracking the situation and have activated necessary response measures to prevent further transmission of the disease among pig populations.
The Chief Minister noted that outbreaks of ASF are not new to Meghalaya and that the state has previously dealt with similar challenges. Drawing on past experience, the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department has been directed to implement precautionary protocols and strengthen monitoring in vulnerable areas.
While acknowledging public concern over the latest cases, Sangma stressed that the number of infections reported so far remains limited. He said the government is focused on containing the outbreak at an early stage to avoid a wider impact on the livestock sector.
Officials are continuing field assessments and awareness campaigns, while preventive measures are being enforced to reduce the risk of the disease spreading to additional districts.
The state government has urged farmers and pig rearers to remain vigilant and cooperate with veterinary authorities as efforts continue to keep the situation under control.
