Meghalaya Floods: Death toll in Garo Hills rises to 15

Teams of the NDRF and SDRF have been deployed to carry out search and rescue operations in the worst-affected areas.

Guwahati: The death toll in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills climbed to 15 after five more people died in flood-related incidents on Sunday.

The deceased have been identified as Bijoy S Sangma, his son Wian Chigado R Marak, Amerin K Marak, her daughter Manase K Marak, and Thenseng R Marak.

Bijoy S Sangma and his son Wian Chigado R Marak were swept away by surging flood waters near the Dimapara bridge in West Garo Hills district.

Amerin K Marak and her daughter Manase K Marak were killed in a landslide in Gongdop village of East Garo Hills.

Thenseng R Marak died after a tree fell on his vehicle he was driving in East Garo Hills district’s Songsak Reserve Forest area.

At least 10 people died on Saturday, including seven members of a family due to a landslide in West Garo Hills district.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Sunday held a review meeting on the situation in the Garo Hills districts.

The Chief Minister ordered immediate ex gratia payments to the next of kin of those killed.  

Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed to carry out search and rescue operations in the worst-affected areas.
