National People’s Party (NPP) chief and chief minister designate Conrad K Sangma is likely to contest from Songsak seat in Garo Hills of Meghalaya.

Outgoing Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has won from Songsak and Ampati. He has to therefore resign from one seat and by-elections would be held. Sources said that Sangma would retain Ampati and resign from Songsak.

40-year-old Conrad is currently MP from Tura Lok Sabha constituency and he did not contest the 2018 Assembly polls in the state.

NPP leader Conrad on Sunday evening met Governor Ganga Prasad to stake claim to form the next government in the state with the support of 34 MLAs. The swearing-in ceremony will take place on Wednesday.

As per the results of the Assembly polls in the state, the Congress retained its hold with 21 seats, while the NPP bagged 19 seats.

The BJP, which drew a blank in the last elections, got two seats. The UDP won six seats while its alliance partner the HSPDP won two seats.

The People’s Democratic Front (PDF) bagged four seats, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) and three Independents got one seat each.

Following the declaration of results, the BJP had on Saturday suggested that the NPP and UDP may enter into an alliance to form a “non-Congress government” in the state.
