The state Election department of Meghalaya is fully geared for the ensuing Assembly elections scheduled for February 27 next.

On Saturday, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of, Frederick Roy Kharkongor along with Additional Chief Electoral Officer, T Lyngwa held meeting with the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police of all the districts of Garo Hills region at in Tura and discussed about poll preparedness in the districts of the region.

Kharkongor reviewed the preparedness in all fronts in the respective districts for the upcoming polls.

The Deputy Commissioners of all the districts of Garo Hills who are also the district election officers briefed the CEO with reports on election matters and its preparedness. The respective SPs of the Garo Hills districts also briefed the state election officers about the security arrangements made for the ensuing elections.

Stressing on the aspect of connectivity and the challenges faced in the region, Kharkongor highlighted the need of having backup mechanism in order to ensure smooth conduct of election process especially on the day of polling.

Kharkongor also reviewed all the necessary measures taken by different service providers for webcasting and for news updates, etc on the day of polling.

Focussing on the main hindrance of continuous power supply, the CEO assured the respective district administrations that the state election commission would be providing solar lanterns as required by the respective districts.

Addressing the issue of accessibility to the polling booths, Kharkongor also urged all the District Election Officers to ensure that ramps and kept in place along with other required facilities in the polling stations and to arrange special assistance for PWD voters.

Kharkongor also urged all the district election officers to keep the state election commission updated and send necessary information related to elections on time.

He also directed all the officials engaged in the election process to follow the procedures as per the guidelines of the Election Commission of India.
