The induction of 8 members of the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous Council (JHADC) in Meghalaya into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been postponed for the next week.

Eight members of the council, four from the opposition Congress and four from the United Democratic Party (UDP), were supposed to be inducted into the BJP on Saturday.

Presently, the BJP has no member in the JHADC.

According to information, the induction ceremony was postponed to September 7 as central leaders of the BJP from Delhi have to attend some other urgent party meeting.

BJP’s political strategist in Northeast and Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was to attend the function at Shillong, cancelled it in view of the publication of the final NRC in Assam on Saturday.

The MDCs decided to join the party for the sake of bailing out the Council from financial crunch.

“We discussed a number of issues and problems being faced by the JHADC including financial constraint and many members of the Council believe that only the BJP can rescue and solve the problems,” a senior BJP leader said.

BJP leaders in Meghalaya also assured the MDCs to take up the matter with the central party leaders and the Central government to assist the Council by all means.

“Besides the 8 MDCs, we are in touch with more members to join the party,” the senior BJP leader said.

BJP legislator and minister of the NPP-led MDA government said besides the 8 MDCs of the JHADC, four more MDCs including three GHADC members and one member of the KHADC would also join the BJP.

The eight members of the JHADC, who would join the BJP include former Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the JHADC, Andrew Shullai; Holando Lamin, Arbor Hima and Aiborlang Shadap, all from the opposition Congress.

The other four MDCs from the UDP include Lakhon Biam, Dawan Lyngdoh, Krishon Langstang and Treilang Suchiang.
