Govt monitoring situation: MEA on Chinese bridge at Pangong Lake

The government is closely monitoring construction of a bridge by China at the Pangong Lake. 

This was stated by the ministry of external affairs (MEA) on Thursday.

“Regarding reports of a bridge being made by China on Pangong Lake, Government of India is monitoring this closely,” the MEA said. 

It added that the site where the bridge is being constructed is under illegal Chinese occupation. 

“This bridge is being constructed in areas that have been under illegal occupation by China for around 60 years,” the MEA said.

It added: “Government is taking steps to ensure our security interests are protected.”

Earlier, the Congress party had slammed the Centre after reports of China building a bridge across the Pangong Lake emerged. 

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha – Mallikarjun Kharge had said, “China is busy building a bridge on Pangong Lake to make it easier to deploy troops.” 

He added: “Meanwhile, ‘Beijing’ Janata Party leaders led by PM and home minister is busy in election rallies. The enemy is at our gates. PM Modi is taking a siesta.” 

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi also questioned the government’s silence on the matter. 

“PM’s silence is deafening. Our land, our people, our borders deserve better,” Rahul Gandhi had said.
