Come April, married women in Assam will have to visit their ancestral home. No ….not for Bihu celebrations but to prove their nationality. May be they will have to elongate their stay at their ancestral homes during this Bihu.
The NRC authorities have decided to verify the documents issued by panchayats to married women. The process will start from April 2.

Talking to Northeast Now, state NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela said, “We will start the verification process of documents issued by panchayats to married women in the state from April 2. Already we have started campaign in this regard. They will have to be present at their ancestral homes during the verification.”
The verification will be done in presence of panchayat secretary and Laat Mandal. Around 29 lakhs of married women had already submitted documents issued by panchayats to prove their nationality in the ongoing process of updating NRC.
Hajela further said family tree verification of 3,50,000 out 9 lakh documents has been completed. The rest will be completed by May 31.

He also said verification of documents from other states is still pending and only 1,65,000 out of 5,50,000 documents have been verified.
Hajela said upcoming panchayat elections will not hamper the ongoing works of NRC because as per Supreme Court directive officials engaged in updating NRC process will not be engaged in other works.
