IMPHAL: Strong winds accompanied by hailstorms and heavy downpours inflicted significant destruction across Manipur on Thursday (May 02).

The adverse weather conditions resulted in power outages, mudslides on national highways, and damage to numerous dwellings and farmhouses across Manipur.

Transportation of heavy vehicles along national highway-37, from Silchar (Assam) to Imphal via the Jiribam district headquarters in Manipur, was severely disrupted due to landslides and mudslides occurring between Awangkhul and Irang villages in Noney district.

In Noney district of Manipur, normal life was severely impacted as the power supply lines of the 33 by 11 KV Noney district were damaged by the strong winds, plunging the area into darkness.

Telecom services also suffered interruptions due to the power failure, affecting government offices, banks, businesses, and educational institutions.

Roadside structures and temporary shelters were blown away by the storms and incessant rainfall.

Meanwhile, in the valley districts of Thoubal and Imphal East in Manipur, fierce storms and heavy rains struck around 4:30 am and 11:35 am on Thursday (May 02), causing havoc in Waithou and Lipokpi villages of Thoubal district in Manipur.

The aftermath of the storms left a trail of destruction, with roofs ripped off houses and walls collapsing.

Additionally, at Keirenbikhokta village in the same district, three furniture houses were also demolished in the fury of nature.

Reports indicated further damage to houses and livestock in Imphal West district of Manipur.
