Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has announced a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh for Peh village in Ukhrul district in appreciation for steps taken to destroy poppy plantation.
“Peh would be promoted as a role model for other villages in our ‘War on Drugs’. I urge residents of all other villages to follow the example of Peh,” Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said.
CM Biren Singh said that the step taken by the villagers of Peh must be appreciated.
A team of experts has also been sent to Peh to find out alternate crops that can be cultivated in the village.
Peh is a village in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, which is home to 600 families.
Notably, the village authority of Peh along with local residents is engaged in destroying huge illegal cultivations of poppy that are smuggled in large quantities across the border.
The Manipur government launched a war on drugs and has been taking numerous steps to prevent cross-border drug trafficking and rooting of large-scale opium cultivation in the state is one of them.
Many farmers cultivate poppy precisely for it being profitable.

In a delightful sign of public participation in governance, I’m happy to learn that the Peh(Paoyi) Village Authority situated in the northern fringe of Ukhrul District voluntarily joined the Govt.’s “War on Drugs” and has destroyed the poppy cultivation within its jurisdiction. pic.twitter.com/eyHeuYZ7Xj
