At least 250 Asiatic buffalos have died during the last one month in Manipur’s Ukhrul district due to an unknown disease.

The incident has left officials of the Veterinary and Horticulture department puzzled.

According to the report, the Asiatic water buffalo deaths have been reported by the cattle owners from various villages, including Wahong, New Tusom, Tusom CV, Tusom Khullen, Kharasom, and Razai Khullen.

Despite over a month since the incident, the authorities have failed to provide the exact cause of the disease, according to a report.

The incident concerns people of the district that is predominantly dependent on agriculture for livelihoods.

Northern Raphei Students’ Union (NRSU) leader Joy Horam has called upon the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry department to take preventive measures and provide training alongside carrying out various awareness campaigns in villages about the domestication of animals.

In October, Northern Raphei Students’ Union had also expressed concern over the reported death of around 50 buffaloes of Asiatic breed in New Tusom and Wahong villages in the Ukhrul district of Manipur.
