A special out patient department (OPD) on tobacco/ nicotine addiction, ganja/cannabis addiction treatment was formally opened at the state run JNIMS hospital in Imphal on Thursday.
Director Dr Th Bhimo of JNIMS, medical superintendent in charge Dr Kameshore and head of department Dr K Shantibala Devi of psychiatry, JNIMS were present during the day’s inauguration function.

In his speech as resource person, Dr Nelson Loitongbam of Psychiatry department highlighted the increase of tobacco addiction in Manipur.
He said the tobacco addiction has risen to about 20.6 per cent.
The common people are not aware of the tobacco addiction, he said.

They did not think of tobacco as a form of substance abuse until it is too late, he added.
They are also not aware that the treatment facilities are available, he also said.
The special OPD which was opened at the Psychiatry OPD section of the JNIMS will be open on every working Thursday from 11am to 2pm.
Alcohol de-addiction services are also available in the same OPD unit, according to Dr Nelson.
Most of the speakers in the day’s function appealed to the general public to avail of the facilities.
