The 18-hour shutdown imposed by the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee has hit normal life in Manipur on Tuesday.
The committee called for the bandh from midnight of December 27 demanding tribe status for the Meiteis of the state.
The committee is miffed at the Manipur government’s failure to send the Meitei ethnographic report on the latest socio-economic survey to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
According to reports, the shutdown has failed to evoke a response in the tribal areas.
Police patrolling the sensitive areas say that there is no report of any untoward incident.
For a long time, the committee has been launching various agitations but the State government is yet to make a decision.
Tribal bodies in general and students, in particular, say that this is a ‘ploy’ to usurp the tribal reserved quotas in all sectors.
