Police are still clueless over the powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast that left two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel dead and three civilians injured at Luwangsangbam Awang Leikai along the National Highway 2 in Imphal of Manipur.

As no militant organization has claimed responsibility of the blast, the motive behind the fatal attack is yet to be established.

The explosion took place around 1.30 pm in front of a grocery shop nearby the gate of 49 BSF battalion head quarter (Assam, Nagaland and Manipur).

The deceased BSF personnel have been identified as N Ningthouba Meitei, aged around 30 years and Sanjay Tirkey, aged around 28 years, of 49 BSF Koirengei.

The BSF personnel were rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in serious condition where they succumbed to their injures.

The blast site is barely a kilometre away from the Luwangshangbam residence of State Chief Minister, N Biren Singh and about 100 metres from the Manipur Public School.

The intensity of the blast was so powerful that it also severely damaged the grocery store.

The three injured civilians are identified as Mangshatabam Premlata, 40 years of age and wife of late M Sudhir of Kanto village; Heishnam Mubi, aged around 35 years and son of one H Manglem of Maiba Khul and Bindya Thakuri, aged 19 years and daughter of one Tilak Bahadur of Koirengei BSF Gate.

Premlata, the shop owner, is currently undergoing treatment at Raj Medicity and her condition is stated to be critical.

A van driver of Manipur Public School also sustained injury in the IED blast.

Immediately after the explosion, top officials of the BSF and Manipur Police had rushed at the blast site to take stock of the situation.

Later, a team of forensic experts also arrived at the blast site and began investigation.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister N Biren Singh has strongly condemned the attack and asserted that his government will take stern action against the perpetrators.
