IMPHAL: The Republican Party of India (Athawale), a constituent in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) which is at the helm of the power in the centre has announced to put up its candidate for the Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency election slated on April 19.

The RPI (Athawale) national secretary, Thounaojam Maheshwar, talking to the newsmen at his residence in Imphal on Sunday said that he would be contesting the forthcoming elections for the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat.

The RPI (Athawale) election committee has given the green signal for his candidature for the ensuing election in Manipur, he told the media.

Notably, he would be the first political leader in the state to fight in the RPI (A) ticker in the Parliamentary elections in Manipur.

In the last assembly election, he fought on the same party platform as a candidate in the Keishamgthong assembly constituency but was unable to capture the seat.

The young film star turned politician told the newsmen that his election campaigns would be based on “save Manipur,” to be refrained from being disintegrated.

Interestingly, in the sixty-member Manipur legislative assembly, there is not a single MLA representing the RPI (A).

In the event of his filing as a candidate for the RPI (A) for the ensuing election, Maheshwar will fight against the Congress candidate Dr A Bimol Akoijam, former Associate Professor at the School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi as of announcement for candidature in the state for the Inner seat.

Meantime, the BJP, the alliance partner of the RPI (A) has announced to set up its candidate for the Inner Manipur seat.

However, the name of the BJP candidate has not been announced. It is likely to be announced in a day or two.
