Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Thursday informed the State Assembly that as a part of modernization of the police force of the State, the Manipur police department would be equipped with sniper rifles, MP5 sub-machine guns and bomb diffusing kits.

The chief minister further said that some of the equipments have already been ordered while responding to queries raised by opposition party during cut motion, according to reports.

Singh also revealed that the police department will post 2217 police personnel in different police stations across Manipur.

Singh also added that his government has introduced new transfer and posting policy which requires a police personnel to stay in his/her place of posting for at least two years.

He also said that to improve the relationship between the police and the general public, the police department organizes several interaction programmes monthly in the state.

The police department has also installed several CCTV cameras at several locations in Imphal and also distributed over 65 police vehicles to meet current shortcomings.

During the cut motion, Congress MLA K Ranjit said that the militants are equipped with better weapons than the police.

He also said that the police force of Manipur had not been successful in curbing anti-social elements.

The chief minister in response to these queries said that the police department has taken all the modernization measures to curb militancy.
