Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal in the Women's 49kg category.

Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu became the first Indian to win an Olympic medal by winning a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games in the Women’s 49kg category.

China’s Hou Zhihui clinched the gold medal.

Mirabai goes for 117kg on her final attempt but she fails and settles for silver.

The new Olympic record was registered by 26-year-old Mirabai Chanu with a successful lift of 115kg in clean and jerk.

With this monumental silver medal, Chanu has become the second Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic medal after Karnam Malleswari.

Malleswari bagged bronze in the 69kg category at the 2000 Sydney Olympic when the weightlifting arena was opened to women for the first time.

Chanu got off to a flying start after she completed her lift of 84 kg in the first attempt in snatch.

Manipur-born weightlifter then proceeded to complete the 87kg weightlift with ease but failed to complete the 89kg lift in her last attempt.
