Imphal: A sportsperson from Manipur has been selected to represent India in the women’s wheelchair basketball team for the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland.
Irengbam Ritu Chanu, daughter of I. Ibochouba Meitei of Bishnupur district in Manipur, is among the members of the Indian team for the women’s wheelchair basketball event at the Commonwealth Games 2026, scheduled to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
Wheelchair basketball provides an inclusive platform for athletes with verified permanent lower-limb impairments to compete on a global stage, including the Paralympic Games. Eligible impairments include paraplegia, lower-limb amputations, cerebral palsy, and polio.
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has expressed heartfelt congratulations to Irengbam Ritu Chanu on her selection to represent India at the Games.
Y. Khemchand Singh, on his Facebook page, wrote, “Her determination and unparalleled courage despite all odds are truly commendable, and I extend my best wishes for her grand success in the Commonwealth Games. The government reaffirms its commitment to encourage such efforts.”
The Manipur team also delivered an impressive performance and reached the finals, where they finished as runners-up to Maharashtra. Their performance contributed to Irengbam Ritu Chanu’s selection for the upcoming international tournament.
The Chief Minister’s statement followed the state cabinet’s approval of government jobs for meritorious sportspersons, including medal winners from national and international events such as the Asian Games and National Games.
The approved positions are generally in Class III and Class IV categories, with higher positions considered for exceptional international achievements.
Around 100 sportspersons will be provided these job opportunities.
