Manipur’s Gyanendro Ningombam has been elected as the Hockey India president.

Ningombam has become the first person from the Northeast to be appointed in the top post of India’s national hockey team.

He was elected to the post unopposed.

According to sources, Ningombam, who has been officiating as the president of Hockey India since July this year after Mohd Mushtaque Ahmad resigned on July 7, 2020 from the post, was elected during the 10th Hockey India Congress and Elections held in New Delhi.

Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh has congratulated Ningombam on being elected to the top post of the Indian hockey team.

Earlier, Ningombam, served as the senior vice-president of Hockey India, senior vice-president of the Manipur hockey team and chief executive officer of the Manipur state hockey team.

“Congratulations to Shri Gyanendro Ningombam on being elected unopposed as Hockey India President at the 10th Hockey India Congress & Elections held in New Delhi. Gyanendro Ningombam becomes the first President from the North East India to spearhead @TheHockeyIndia,” the Manipur CM tweeted.

Ningombam also served as the editor of Manipur’s evening daily, Meeyam.
