After Tamenglong forest division’s observation, Churachandpur forest division of Manipur started to celebrate the 64th wildlife week from October 2 and it will continue till October 8, official sources said.

A mass rally was also organized from Forest Gate, Tuibong to District Training Centre near DC Office, Churachandpur under the aegis of office of the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Churachandpur, sources from Churachandpur district said.

Many school children from across the district also pledged for conservation of wildlife with different slogans.

Plantation of saplings was also undertaken as part of the Wildlife Week celebration.

Deputy Commissioner Pawan Yadav of Churachandpur district, SP Amrita Sinha, DFO Churachandpur N Ganesh Thangboi Gangte, ADC Churachandpur Sangboi Gangte, Additional SP (Law & Order) Lunminthang Haokip, SDO Tuibongand others also attended the celebration, according to DIPR sources.

“The preservation of wildlife has become very necessary and it is our duty to preserve it,” chairman T Paukhanlian of Autonomous District Council, Churachandpur said while speaking at the function.

The wildlife week, which will be observed for seven days, aims to protect the wildlife and spread the message that only humans can save wildlife.

Hunting among the tribals is traditional and the practices of hunting directly affects the ecosystems and the long-term effect of taking these species from their natural environments are devastating as it not only threatens their survival but also the survival of other species, he added.
