Imphal: Two Naga civilians were reportedly killed and two others injured after suspected Kuki militants opened fire at Kalenjang village in Manipur’s Senapati district near the Nagaland border on Saturday afternoon.
According to reports, the incident took place at around 2:30 pm, shortly after Manipur Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh left a function at the nearby Maram College.
The deceased were identified as Rocky Mao of Chowainamei village and Kumar Poumai of Laii Shirafii. Both reportedly died at the spot.
The two injured victims were identified as 49-year-old Ashiho Sani of Shajouba and 33-year-old Adani Manio of Makhel. Both are from the Mao Naga community.
The injured were taken to GetWell Hospital for medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were shifted to District Hospital, Senapati, for necessary procedures.
Police personnel reached the site shortly after the shooting and began assessing the circumstances surrounding the incident. A ground report was reportedly being prepared as of 2:45 pm.
Reports have alleged the involvement of cadres of the Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA) in the incident. However, the allegation has not been independently verified.
The exact sequence of events, circumstances leading to the shooting and nature of the injuries could not be independently confirmed at the time of filing. Police are investigating the identities of those responsible, the motive behind the incident and the alleged involvement of KRA cadres.
