Imphal: A tribal woman was shot in the leg during a land-related dispute in the Khoupum sub-division of Manipurโs Noney district on Monday, officials reported on Wednesday.
The shooting occurred during a commotion involving members of the Riamei clan. Tension arose after a village head attempted to declare Guitang (Duithanjang) village as public land, a move rejected by the majority of the clan.
According to reports, two miscreants, accompanied by a tribal village head, opened fire, injuring a woman identified as Premilla Kamei Riameipui, 38, a resident of Guitang village.
She sustained a gunshot wound to her right shin, between the calf and ankle, and was rushed to a nearby primary health center for treatment.
The report further alleged that the person who fired the shot was identified as Neilasin, son of Gabriel Kamei of Longleinang, acting under the direction of Arei Thoitak, son of Thoitak Shong Chiru of Bungte Chiru in Kangpokpi district.
The village authority condemned the incident and urged the concerned authorities to take necessary action to maintain peace and prevent further escalation of tension in the area.
In a follow-up action, the police are attempting to establish the details of the case, the reports added.
