Imphal: The Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) reported that crimes against women and children increased in 2025 compared to the previous year, 2024, in the state.
MSCW Chairperson Tiningpham Monsang said a total of 61 cases of crimes against women and children were reported in 2025, against 48 cases in 2024.
The MSCW had also registered 58 cases in 2023, 78 in 2022 and 84 in 2021. The latest crime against a woman occurred in Imphal West district in late December 2025. Khaidem (Ongbi) Chaoba Devi (26), a resident of Wangoi Mamang Khaidem in Imphal West, Manipur, who was reported missing on December 26, 2025, was later found dead under suspicious circumstances. The incident subsequently triggered protests and agitations by local residents and her family.
In 2025, cases of sexual violence included nine rapes, one gang rape and 18 molestation cases. Violent crimes comprised 15 murders, five assaults and four suspicious deaths. Other crimes included 12 cases of missing persons, two attempted kidnappings, one trafficking case and one case involving obscene images.
High-profile murders during the year included the killing of a 57-year-old woman in Imphal East with multiple stab wounds in September and the murder of a 67-year-old retired psychotherapist at her residence in October 2025. Multiple cases of women dying during childbirth were also reported at RIMS Hospital, with allegations of medical negligence.
The MSCW noted that many cases continue to go unreported due to fear, lack of clarity on where to file complaints, or a preference for private settlements.
Monsang appealed to the public to report crimes against women and children to the MSCW, stressing that every individual has a role to play in promoting gender equality.
