Imphal: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday stated that, due to the prevailing law and order situation in the state, the summer vacation for schools has been reduced from three weeks to one week to make up for lost academic time.
The Government of Manipur declared the shortened summer break effective immediately. The Chief Minister made the announcement while attending the inaugural function of a three-day workshop on “Reforms in School Education of Manipur: An Approach to Implementation, Challenges and Opportunities of NEP-2020.”
The event was organised by Vidya Bharati Shiksha Vikash Samiti, Manipur, at the City Convention Centre, Imphal.
He noted that the normal functioning of educational institutions and government offices was disrupted for nearly a month following the tragic Tronglaobi incident.
The incident involved a bomb attack on April 7, 2026, in Tronglaobi village in Bishnupur district. A projectile struck a civilian residence around 1:00 a.m., killing two children (aged 5 and 6) and critically injuring their mother.
Consequently, Saturdays were declared working days for all government departments to compensate for the lost time. The Chief Minister added that Saturdays will return to being holidays once the pending government work is completed.
Regarding the successful implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Singh emphasised that the responsibility does not rest solely with the government. He stressed that the policy can be implemented successfully only when the government, employees, and citizens work together with strong determination.
He also highlighted that NEP 2020 lays the foundation for the education sector to achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047.
Furthermore, Singh said that teaching in a childโs mother tongue up to Class V would help students learn more effectively and at a faster pace. He expressed optimism that the workshop would help realise the broader objectives of NEP 2020.
Quoting Nelson Mandela, the Chief Minister underscored the importance of education, stating that it is one of the most powerful tools available to change the world.
