IMPHAL: Amidst the reports of an exchange of gunfire between the Indian security forces and miscreants, Leader of the Opposition at the Parliament and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi arrived at the Jiribam district headquarters in Manipur on Monday.

Rahul who arrived at the Jiribam Higher Secondary School, Jiribam district headquarters from Silchar Airport (Assam) took stock of the prevailing situation in the Jribam district of Manipur bordering Cachar district of Assam.

He arrived at the Silchar Airport from Delhi by a Charter flight, officials said.

At the Silchar airport, he was accorded a warm welcome by the leaders of the Congress including former Manipur Chief Minister and leader of the opposition in the state assembly, Okram Ibobi, and MPCC president K Meghachandra.

From Sichar the leaders reached the Jiribam by road. Reports stated Rahul had met several Internally displaced persons currently taking refuge at different relief camps in Jiribam district headquarters.

His arrival at the Jiribamhappened when there were reports that some armed miscreants from the higher location of Phaiton village under the Tousem subdivision of Tamenglong district opened firing towards the Jiribam side, an inter districts, at around 3 am on Monday.

The Indian security forces also retaliated the firing and massive operations are also still going on in the suspected locations in these villages.

There is no report of casualty so far, the reports said.

The report added that a farmhouse belonging to a Meitei community at Lalpani, in Jiribam district was also set on fire by the miscreants in the early hours on Monday.
